Who We Serve

Burney Wealth Management serves clients throughout Richmond and the Virginia area. We work with people whose financial lives have real complexity: equity compensation from publicly traded companies, high household income, and planning decisions that have significant tax consequences.

Business Owners

Individuals with Equity Compensation

Retirees &
Pre-Retirees

Northern Virginia has one of the most concentrated populations of small and mid-size businesses in the country, from federal contractors in Herndon to professional services firms in Reston Town Center to technology startups along the Dulles corridor. If you own a business here, your personal and business finances are intertwined in ways most advisors don't address simultaneously.

We help owners plan across both sides, including:

  • Cash flow planning and long-term wealth strategy
  • Retirement plan options that fit your business structure and tax situation
  • Tax planning before and after major business events
  • Coordinating your business decisions with your personal investment strategy

Richmond is home to an unusually high number of publicly traded companies for a metro its size, spanning insurance, energy, consumer brands, and healthcare. CarMax, Markel, Dominion Energy, Altria, and Performance Food Group are all headquartered here, and Capital One runs one of its largest campuses just outside the city*. If you work at one of them, there’s a good chance equity compensation makes up a meaningful part of your total pay and is one of your biggest tax decisions each year.

We help you make smart choices before, during, and after key events, including:

  • Understanding your grants, vesting schedules, and what you actually own
  • Planning exercise and sale timing to reduce your tax bill and manage AMT exposure
  • Managing concentrated stock positions as part of your broader portfolio
  • Coordinating equity income with cash flow and long-term wealth goals

*The Burney Company is neither affiliated with nor endorsed by any of these entities.

Richmond and surrounding areas have one of the highest concentrations of federal government employees and retirees in the country. If you've spent a career in the federal government or a contractor role, you may have a FERS pension, a TSP account, and Social Security all coming online at different times. Getting those pieces to work together well is not automatic.

Whether you're 5 years out or already there, we help you build a plan that holds up, including:

  • Building a withdrawal strategy across accounts to reduce what you pay in taxes

  • Coordinating your FERS pension and TSP with Social Security timing

  • Adjusting your investment strategy to match where you are in retirement

  • Planning ahead for healthcare costs, estate decisions, and what you leave behind

Planning around Virginia's tax rules

Virginia taxes income, which means the decisions you make throughout your career have real consequences at the state level, not just federal. A few things worth knowing:

Virginia does not tax Social Security benefits. But most other retirement income like pension payments, IRA distributions, investment income, is taxed at the state level. Virginia does offer a $12,000 deduction for residents age 65 and older, but for most high-income households in Northern Virginia, that only goes so far.

If you hold equity compensation, Virginia taxes gains as ordinary income in the year you realize them. That can push your effective tax rate higher in vesting years if you're not planning ahead.

Our in-house tax team works alongside your financial planner from day one. That means your investment decisions and your tax strategy aren't developed in separate rooms and handed to you at the end.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you work with federal employees and contractors specifically?

Yes. We're familiar with FERS pensions, TSP accounts, and the planning questions that come with a federal career or contractor role. We help clients think through how those pieces fit together with Social Security and what their retirement income picture actually looks like.

What is your responsibility to me as a fiduciary?

The primary duty of a fiduciary is to place your interests above our own. In 1974, Burney became one of the first Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) firms in Virginia. As a fee-only RIA, we are held to the fiduciary standard.

Do you only work with clients in Richmond?
While we serve many clients in Richmond, we also work with clients across Virginia and nationwide.
Does Virginia tax retirement income?
Virginia does not tax Social Security benefits, but most other retirement income is taxed at the state level. Residents age 65 and older may deduct up to $12,000 from their taxable income. How that applies to you depends on your sources of income and how your withdrawals are structured. We can walk you through what it means for your plan.
What makes your approach "tax-centric"?

We evaluate major planning and investment decisions through an after-tax lens and coordinate proactively around key tax years. Our in-house CPA tax team* is part of your financial team.

*The Burney Company offers tax preparation and planning services to its financial planning clients via Burney Tax Advisors, a separate yet affiliated firm staffed by licensed CPAs. Burney Tax Advisors handles federal and state tax returns for individuals, trusts, and businesses. Fees for tax preparation and planning are separate from advisory fees.
